Empty Bowls Project - Paducah

I love initiatives like this. The very sweet and fabulous Michael Terra has launched the Empty Bowls project in Paducah. Love, Love, LOVE!!!

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise, swiped right from the website, is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. Statistics show that one out of eight Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Millions of people have lost their jobs during the most recent recession and the number of food stamp recipients has increased dramatically.

Michael, a potter himself, has been hosting numerous bowl-making and glazing events right over there in his darling Terra Cottage Ceramics at 514 North 7th St. You can keep up with who’s been doing what on his Empty Bowls Project of Paducah Facebook page.

The event is set for noon-5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Robert Cherry Civic Center. Tickets are $15, with proceeds going to help alleviate hunger here locally. So make plans to stop in for soup and take home a beautiful bowl. If you’d like to create a bowl for the event, just reach out to Michael, 908.0090.

Well done, Michael!
