First off, kudos to organizations such as The Red Cross, and McCracken County Emergency Services who assist people with disaster on a regular basis! Specifically for Flood 2011, I know there are so many people - organizations, groups, and individuals - who are helping with flood relief efforts. But here are a couple that I feel stand out:
Spearheaded largely by Bella Bazooka and consisting of Bazooka fans, individuals from Paducah Prom, Paducah Moon and friends, this group has gone from sometimes “rocking the boat” on the area’s important political issues to literally “manning the boat” for flood relief. They have been out in the trenches since day one assisting in whatever way they can. Those needing sandbagging, water pumps, evacuation assistance, and more have been helped by this team. They have worked closely with emergency management but via social media people are able to contact this group directly and Bella has made her personal cell phone available for those that need help to call. If you would like to join their group of volunteers, call Bella at 270-366-9565.
Paducah Power is coordinating a “Stuff the Truck for Flood Relief” event Monday and Tuesday May 9 and 10 in their parking lot at 1500 Broadway, Paducah. Items are needed to fill that truck with supplies that the American Red Cross will use for clean up kits. When the water finally goes down, there will be a big need for these supplies! Items needed include: bleach, household cleaning products, mops, buckets, brooms, rakes, sponges, papertowels, garbage bags, insect repellant, and sunscreen. Once stuffed, the truck will go to the temporary distribution center the Red Cross will set up in the community. For more information, contact Andrea Underwood at 270-575-4025.
Know a special person, group or business that has gone above and beyond to help with flood relief? Give them a shout out here in the comments!. Thanks to all who are helping our community in this time of need.
