Dear Jody,
What is the actual significance of the Cinco de Mayo holiday?
Quierda/o Amiga/o (that there’s Spainish — I googled it),
Wiki tells me that Cinco de Mayo is actually a commemoration of victory in battle over some white Frenchy dudes, who, like most white dudes at the time, were trying to take over some un-white people’s native land. It is not a federally mandated national holiday in Mexico, although many Mexicans celebrate this day as a means to appreciate their heritage and culture.
In the good ol’ US of A, Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated as just another day people can get drunk and wear funny clothes while they pretend they are from another county.
Thus it can only be by the Manos of Fate that Jody Suhrheinrich was born on this day.
Forwhomsoever else loves to dance, drink and play dress up as much as Jody Suhrheinrich? For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten tiny-Mexican-looking-midget-of-German-name-and-descent to ruin the world. Or at least iList Paducah.
So I hope you all learned something of value from this column — appreciate the Mexican culture and come out with me dressed in your best sombrero and mas tequila, because we at iList Paducah are ready for a FIESTA!
It’s our iList Paducah Cinco de Mayo Party at Russell’s Bar & Grill, 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 5. (It’s actually the third year anniversary of iList Paducah, and that, in itself, is reason to celebrate.)
I’ll be the short girl in the giant hat yelling “CINCO CINCO CINCO!”
Salud,
Jody
P.S. We also celebrate the birth of “Nacho,” the Crabtrees’ Beagle, on Cinco de Mayo. Te quiero, Nacho. Stop barking.
