Saturday, May 26
Wow, what a weekend in Paducah, am I right? It really started last Wednesday with Porkstock and hasn’t officially ended yet since I still have 10 tons of pork shoulder in my freezer… I’m still in a pork and fried things on sticks coma, so I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves (with a few snarky comments here and there, of course!)
Wednesday, September 21 — Porkstock

Thursday, September 22 — Dinner and Rain
One of my very best friends was visiting me from Colorado – her fourth visit to Paducah, but first to BBQ on the River. She’s originally from the south and apparently you can’t get BBQ in Boulder, so she was thrilled to experience the porkfest! We made it our goal to consume as many things on sticks and fried things as possible over the course of the three day event, so we started right in. After warming up with brisket and ribs, I moved immediately to fried pickles and Denise went straight to the stick! Since Mary reported on the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville, I’ve been hearing about Deep Fried KoolAid, so of course I had to give it a try too…

I had no concept of how they might fry KoolAide, but it turned out to be basically a doughnut hole flavored with cherry KoolAide. Not too bad, actually!
Friday, September 23 — The Porkfest Continues
You guessed it – more pork and fried stuff – this time in the form of BBQ nachos and fried okra, corn, green tomatoes and green beans!

This required a rest by the river before continuing…

... with a walk up Broadway to the Art á la Cart Gallery, BeBe’s Artisan Market and Twisted Willow. Oh, and there was a funnel cake in there somewhere too…

Saturday, September 24 — Here Comes the Judge!

One of the great perks of running this little website (other than forcing you all to look at my photos) is getting to do fun things like judging BBQ! This is the second time I’ve had the opportunity to judge shoulder and look at the esteemed panel of judges I sat with (and probably offended): City Manager Jeff Peterson, Chief of Police James Berry and Santa Claus! It gave me a false sense of my own importance, but didn’t improve my behavior AT ALL. Just ask them. After consuming about a gazillion different preparations of pork shoulder, I actually chose two containers to bring home with me, so I’m STILL eating pork!
There were plenty of other things going on besides eating… but I was on such a pork high that I barely noticed or remembered to document them! Here are a few other interesting things I saw along the way: A catfish bigger than me and a clown making balloon animals. Not sure which frightened me more…

...and last but not least, kids in bubbles:
