Kelsie Gray is a poetess, pie alchemist, and English teacher. She lives with three cats who all suffer from varying degrees of insanity and makes a hobby of photographing herself in bathtubs that do not belong to her.

Suzanne Clinton
Serving up the random online musings of an over-thinking 40-something liberal with a serious attitude problem and a dog that eats its own poop since 2005. Read her at Bizzyville.

UPDATE: I thought you’d like to know that Jay’s organs have now brought new life to five people in Paris. Along with his heart and liver, which I mentioned below, his cornea, kidneys and lungs were successfully transplanted.
I’m deeply saddened to tell you that my sweet brother-in-law, Jay Brockenborough, suffered a massive brain hemorrhage Thursday evening. The damage to his brain was so severe that doctors did not expect him to recover, and they’ve been unable to pinpoint the exact cause. Perhaps it was genetics. Perhaps high blood pressure. We just don’t know for sure.
Bruce arrived in Paris, Jay’s adopted home for the past several years, Saturday morning, and has been by Jay’s side the whole time.
We lost Jay Sunday evening. He was just 44.
We’ve received the most amazing outpouring of love and support via Facebook, calls, emails and visits — it’s truly touched our hearts the way that Jay touched so many here in Paducah and, actually, all over the world. Thank you.
And it’s comforting to know that Jay’s heart lives on. Bruce just called to say that Jay’s heart and his liver have already been transplanted, giving new life to others the way Jay would have wanted.
Please join us for a celebration of Jay’s own life. His memorial service is set for 6 p.m., Friday, July 2, at St. Thomas More in Paducah. I’ll share more details soon.
In the meantime, I’d like to share one of Jay’s favorite passages from Marcus Aurelius. He used to have this taped to a mirror when he lived in Lexington….
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
You succeeded well, my friend. We’ll miss you very, very much.

Oh, Mary… I’m so sorry. When you first posted this on facebook, I took a look at Jay’s page and was overwhelmed by the beauty of his photography and obvious joy for life. The quote you have above is wonderful, a map for life we should all aspire to! You and Bruce have my sincere sympathy and I hold you and the rest of your family in my thoughts and prayers.
