Super nice Current cover story today by Paducah Sun Entertainment Reporter Adam Shull. It’s about our friend Sarah Roush (right), who, after surviving breast cancer, is now in a major battle with bone and liver cancer.
Sarah is absolutely lovely, well-known for her beautiful artwork, her wonderful contributions to Paducah’s art community — including the formation of the Wastelanders — and, in general, for being an all-around great gal. She’s one of those original, creative women you just want to be more like.
Sarah is so loved that one friend in particular, playwright Constance Alexander, is planning a very special show in her honor. It’s the Paducah premiere of Constance’s spoken opera, The Way Home, set for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 22, at Market House Theatre’s Black Box Theatre, located on South Second Street.
The piece centers around cancer and its impact on people’s lives. It will be performed by local women, including Marsha Cash, Renie Barger, Elyse Millizer, Julie Howard Price, Emily Hensel and cancer survivor Darlene Mazzone, publisher of Paducah Life. April Cochran directs.
Tix are $15 (call the box office, 270.444.6828), with all the money raised going to the Friends of Sarah Roush fund at Paducah Bank to help Sarah cover her medical bills. One of her treatment shots alone costs $5,000, Sarah tells Adam in today’s story. She takes four of them every three weeks.
There’s a reception afterward at Two Street Studio, located at 126 South 2nd St., featuring Sarah’s water colors, photo collages and ceramic sculptures — which will be on sale — and music by Mark Donham. You can see a preview of Sarah’s art for sale on her website.
Sounds like a great show for a very sweet cause.
