Local Artists Build Art on the Spot

Bob Paschedag has generously offered his welding skills to help build the sculpture.
Paducah Arts Alliance’s first Artist in Residence, Corrine Spielewoy, is back in town with a new collaborative art project!
Local artists begin work Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 7:30 p.m., on a collaborative sculpture and will continue to work throughout the following day, beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, to build a piece based on the African concept of Ubuntu. The sculpture will be built and displayed on the lawn at Etcetera Coffeehouse, located at 320 North 6th St.
Ubuntu is a South African concept that teaches that humans cannot live in isolation from one another and still truly be human. There is a need for community and connectedness throughout society, no matter what the country or culture.
Participating artists are Bettie Griffin, Char Downs, Charlotte Erwin, Corinne Spielewoy, Freda Fairchild, Glenn Hall, Lily Liu, Mitch Kimball, Paul Lorenz, Ruth Baggett, Shand Stamper and iList Paducah’s own Nikki May. The artists will piece together their individual sections of the project in order to make a unified sculpture, communicating the importance of building community with one another. Each piece will be added one by one, today, until the project is complete.
“The challenge for the artists, as well as for the public, is to communicate and interact with each other in such a way that individual achievement contributes harmoniously towards a common goal,” said Corinne Spielewoy, a visiting international artist leading the project.
The project will be on display on the lawn at Etcetera Coffeehouse. Visitors to the LowerTown Arts District should stop by to watch the artists work and to view their finished sculpture this week.
The project is sponsored by the Paducah Renaissance Alliance and Greater Paducah Sustainability. For more information on the sculpture project, please call 444.8649 or visit paducahartsalliance.
