About Our Wine Expert: Thomas Cottrell, Ph.D.
Our Wine Tasting and Auction features wine expert Dr. Thomas Cottrell, who will guide us through the special Grand Tasting portion of the evening.
A native of Ithaca, NY, Dr. Cottrell started in the wine industry in 1970 in the Napa Valley, founding Cuvaison. Later he co-founded Pine Ridge Winery, and launched several others as a consultant.
In 1982, Dr. Cottrell came to Geneva, NY, as Cornell’s first Associate Professor of Enology, became acquainted with winemaking in the East, and learned how to make 550 lots of wine in a season.
Subsequently, he was the Manager/Winemaker for Chalk Hill Winery in Sonoma County, which he grew from 14,000 cases to 60,000 cases per year, and for Sakonnet Vineyards in Rhode Island, which he grew from 12,000 cases to 35,000 cases per year.
Returning to Ithaca in 1995, Dr. Cottrell now consults for wineries and winery start-ups in the Finger Lakes, on Long Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia and other parts of the East.
In 2005, Dr. Cottrell was asked to serve as the Extension Enologist for the University of Kentucky, and moved to Lexington to do so. His sales and consulting activities continue outside of Kentucky.

Why does the Carson Center need a fundraising event?
The Carson Center is a nonprofit performing arts center. Ticket sales and facility rentals generate approximately 75 percent of the annual funding that enables the Carson Center to present superior performances and arts education. The rest of the funding is contributed in a variety of ways, including the Wine Tasting & Auction.
Proceeds from the Wine Tasting & Auction Support:
Class Acts Education Series for preschool through high school students (those in your family, those in your neighborhood)
Arts Education (learning activities led by professional performers from throughout the world)
Bringing top national and international performers close to home — our drive to the Carson Center is much more affordable than an out-of-town trip
A cultural and economic cornerstone: The Carson Center makes a $7.4 million annual economic impact on our region.
Support the Carson Center — and celebrate wine, food and the arts — by attending the Wine Tasting and Auction. Call 270.443.9932, ext. 240 or 241 for information and reservations.
