The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The organization carries out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects and low birthweight.
It’s also a big job — one that more than 1,400 employees and 3 million volunteers in 51 chapters, two regional offices and the national office contribute to every day. These statistics to prove the group’s importance:
- One in eight babies is born premature.
- Premature babies are born too soon, some so small that they must struggle just to survive.
- Many premature babies face life-long medical problems such as blindness, cerebral palsy and learning problems.
- Since 2000, the percentage of all babies born preterm increased more than 7% nationally and 14% in Kentucky.
- The average lifelong medical cost of a premature baby is $500,000.
- Every hour three babies die.
- Birth defects are the leading cause of infant mortality.
- More babies in the U.S. die before their first birthday than in 25 other nations.
So plan to attend the event and help save babies!
