Celebrating Black History Month
West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) celebrates Black History Month with several activities on and off campus.
During February, the WKCTC Office of Cultural Diversity will host a weekly trivia contest for students, faculty and staff to encourage more interest in and knowledge about African-American history and culture. Pick up your trivia questions and test your knowledge of African-American history. Questions will be posted in the Anderson Technical Building, Rosenthal Hall, and the Student Center. Weekly winners will receive a $25 gift card to the WKCTC bookstore and the overall winner will receive a $100 gift card to Kentucky Oaks Mall. More details here!
Friday, Feb. 11
The Clemens Fine Arts Center on the WKCTC campus will present the three-time Tony Award-winning Sophisticated Ladies, 7:30 p.m. The score features the hits of Duke Ellington including: Take the “A” Train, I’m Beginning to See the Light, It Don’t Mean a Thing, In a Sentimental Mood, Satin Doll, I Got It Bad, That Ain’t Good, and of course, Sophisticated Ladies. Saturday, Feb. 12
The Hotel Metropolitan hosts its 5th Annual Grand Ma’s Recipes, a Soul Food Sampler, 11 a.m., Hotel Metropolitan, 724 Oscar Cross Ave. Program includes a skit and a presentation from the Fulton County Paranormal Investigators. Join us for authentic Soul Food Cooking: chitterlings, turkey dressing, fried chicken, mac-n-cheese, slaw, greens and more.
Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 23-24
WKCTC will host presentations on Black Wall Street. The audience will see a documentary film that takes a look at the historical and affluent Greenwood community in Tulsa, Ok., which was reserved for “blacks” immediately after the Civil War. A question and answer session will follow the film. Black Wall Street presentations will be held:
- Feb. 23 in Crounse Hall 101 at 3:30 p.m.
- Feb. 24 in the Emerging Technology Center, room 109 at 5:30 p.m.
USEC, Inc. is sponsoring Black Wall Street and the WKCTC trivia contest.
Sunday, Feb. 27
WKCTC is sponsoring its first Super Sunday event at Paducah’s Greater Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church and Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Super Sunday is a statewide inititative, which include all 16 colleges in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) partnering with African-American churches in their communities to host information fairs for prospective college students and their families.
WKCTC President Barbara Veazey will speak at Mount Moriah, 1201 South 8th St., and WKCTC Vice President of Student Affairs Belinda Dalton-Russell will speak at Greater Lincoln Heights, 1324 Bloomfield Ave. Both services begin at 10:45 a.m. WKCTC representatives will be on hand following the services to talk with potential students and their parents about the admission and enrollment process, financial aid, scholarship opportunities, available programs and services and any other additional educational information.
