Competition? It’s All In The Training

alt textOK, I’ve been telling you about the Paducah Kennel Club Show that’s coming up on June 12 and 13, and the Agility Trial that’s out at the SportsPlex on June 18, 19 and 20. You’ll find all that scoop here!

This week, I thought you might enjoy seeing how much fun it is to train your dog for competition.

The American Kennel Club has recently opened up its performance events to mixed breed dogs. This means that any dog will soon be able to compete in AKC agility and obedience. The Paducah Kennel Club has long welcomed mixed breeds (fondly called “All Americans”) in our classes, as well as just about every breed out there.

The fact is? We love dogs. Big dogs, little dogs, champion dogs, rescued dogs, old dogs, baby dogs. We love dogs.

alt textThis week our Beginning Agility class graduated, as did our Pet Obedience class. Graduates of the Pet Obedience class were invited to take the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, as well as certification for Therapy Dogs International. As a result there are six new dogs in our area that are ready to visit folks in hospitals, nursing home and domestic shelters — six new dogs who are ready to participate in the miraculous National READ program which helps children drastically improve their reading skills.

Take a look at the dogs and people in these photos, and see more on the PKC’s blog and see if you think they’re having fun!

alt textAnd remember, before you take a class with your dog from ANYONE, ask to see the Title Certificates they have earned with their dogs. Never take a class from someone who has not titled dogs in whatever venue you’re working. Never. Would you go to a dentist who had never filled a cavity?

Spending time teaching your dog stuff that makes you proud? It rocks!
