October: It’s A Dog’s Life Month

alt textWell, here’s some hot news indeed: October is “It’s A Dog’s Life Month” at our very own West Kentucky Community and Technical College. Special book club, a Darling Dog Photo Contest and lots more fun ahead!

The initiative is designed to enhance the culture of literacy on campus and in the community. Each year, English Department Program Coordinator and Quality Enhancement Plan Director Kimberly Gregory Russell and team select a novel that folks can read together. Last year it was Homer Hickam’s Rocket Boy. This year’s community novel is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

Stein is scheduled to speak at the college in March.

Now, dear iPet readers, the narrator of the NY Times bestseller, The Art of Racing in the Rain, is – hold onto your tennis balls – a TV-watching, family-loving dog. Yep, dog. Which is why October is “It’s A Dog’s Life Month” at the college.

alt textThe college is sponsoring a Darling Dog Photo contest for WKCTC faculty, staff and students. Photos are to be submitted from Oct. 1-6. “Even if you do not have an entry to submit, please take a moment to view the photos and vote in the Matheson Library, Oct. 12-22,” says Kim. The winners of each category receive a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble.

There is also an essay contest, which is open not only to faculty, staff, students and the community at large. The winner of that gets a $100 B&N gift card!

The Matheson Library is full of fun displays of dogs this month. Kim says, “There are also reading group meetings to discuss The Art of Racing in the Rain, which are open to the community as well.”

alt textThe project, Kim says, supports literacy among students, faculty and staff by enhancing WKCTC’s reading environment, and it helps faculty better assist students in enhancing their reading comprehension abilities.

The month’s festivities culminate Thursday, Oct. 29, with a reading of a little book of dog stories by a local author. (More on that later.) The photo contest winners will be announced during the reading.

If anyone has questions about any of the activities, please contact Kim, 534.3203.
