Paws 4 A Cause - Issue 4a

alt text

alt textalt textIn November of last year, mother and son duo Lourdes and Eric Spencer started a bi-weekly newsletter called Paws 4 A Cause, with the goal of helping to bring about a time when there are no unwanted, unloved or abandoned animals. Their purpose is to easily bring together pets with families. iList Paducah wants to help them. Look for excerpts here from their newsletter each week - including advice, training tips and adoption information!

Tips for new pet owners

Pet ownership can be a very rewarding experience for the entire family. Pets bring much joy and companionship to their families. However,  they do require attention to make the relationship rewarding, for the pet and it’s new owner.

The first thing that you should do after adopting your new pet, is to have them examined by your veterinarian. Many problems that affect pets can be prevented or minimized if detected early.  Your veterinarian will be able to discuss diet, exercise,  vaccinations, and parasite prevention with you. There are also conditions that humans can contract from their pets that your veterinarian will discuss. Together you and your veterinarian can work together to keep your pet healthy.

Socialization of the new pet is also very important. A pet that is well socialized will be much more enjoyable on family outings. Also, they are easier to handle and work with on trips to your veterinarian, groomer,  or kennel. Socializing dogs can be accomplished through behavior training classes, visiting pet friendly parks and pet parades. Socialization of cats is harder due to their nature. Inside cats should be socialized by having them around people in their home after the cat has adjusted to their new surroundings.

If your new pet hasn’t been spayed or neutered, this needs to be done. Your veterinarian will let you know when the best time to have these surgeries performed. Having your pet spayed or neutered can make your pet less likely to roam and fight and may reduce the risk of some cancers.

Pet ownership is very rewarding and beneficial to both the pet and the new family. Pets can help children learn responsibility and offer excellent companionship to the elderly.  By working together with your veterinarian and adopting agency, you can create a wonderful bond for many years of enjoyment.
